Disability Services Associate
School for International Training
World Learning’s accredited academic institution, School for International Training (SIT), seeks a Disability Services Associate who will support the Department of Student Affairs- Disability Services to provide a range of support services and reasonable accommodations to qualified students with disabilities so they may have equal access to the educational experience. The Disability Services Associate will directly support the institution's need for assistance in administering accommodations, creating alternate format and accessible course materials, providing reader and scribing support, and developing access-related resources for students, faculty, and staff.
This is a temporary, non-benefited, part-time position at 20 hours per week, which may include evenings or weekends. The position requires computer work and communicating with students and staff via phone, Skype, email, and in-person. The Disability Services Associate will report to the Assistant Director of Disability Services and will be based at the School for International Training in Brattleboro- Vermont.
Responsibilities
· Locate and/or create accessible course materials in digital formats (PDF, Word, RTF) or other formats as required. This may include searching electronic library databases or scanning and converting print materials into accessible formats;
· Review print materials that have been converted into electronic format as well as electronic course materials (PowerPoints, handouts, etc.) for accuracy and accessibility;
· Work directly with students in providing accommodations including, but not limited to, sighted assistance for course material that is not web accessible; and transcribing dictated course assignments;
· Provide information about Disability Services and the accommodation process to students, faculty, and staff;
· Assist with maintaining electronic resource management system (Symplicity Accommodate); updating surveys and student resources, and preparing new accommodation requests for review;
· Manage the distribution, collection, and maintenance of assistive technology inventory loaned to graduate and study abroad students;
· Assist with gathering and maintaining up-to-date information about accessibility at SIT's U.S.-based campuses and study abroad program centers;
· Support the development of disability-related resources for the campus community;
· Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required
· Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a related field;
· At least one-year professional experience working with individuals with disabilities;
· Ability to maintain student confidentiality consistent with the institution's commitments under the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act;
· Familiarity with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA);
· Flexibility in scheduling time to work one-on-one with students, this may include evenings or weekends;
· Awareness around issues of disability including an understanding of ableism;
· Effective communication and organization skills and attention to detail;
· Familiarity with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word).
Preferred
· Experience with Adobe Acrobat;
· Familiarity and/or direct experience with different assistive technologies (i.e. Kurzweil, JAWS, VoiceOver);
· Familiarity and/or direct experience with the process of creating accessible documents (Optical Character Recognition, tagged document structures, PDF, PowerPoint, Word).
